Bowing to the Inevitable?
I’m considering hiring a social media specialist, for advice on how to try to reach audiences in ways that I never have before. Yes, this is a blog site, but nobody reads it. I have no idea how to “drive” people to this site. “Driving” makes it sound like I’m herding cattle, so you must get the idea (correctly) that I don’t like social media.
But it’s necessary, or so it seems. Giving talks in libraries has not sold many books for me. And who knows when people will gather in libraries again? Perhaps not at all in 2021.
So I must find someone who can tell me: This is where you are now, Jeff Heller. And if this is where you want to get to, here are the steps you must take to get there. And then I have to decide: Is this worth the effort to me? Will it be enjoyable or just tedious and frustrating? Can I pay someone to do all the online outreach or would that be too expensive?
I have no answers yet, but I have to find out. I owe that to myself, for all the years I’ve put into writing novels that very few people even know about, let alone read. And I owe it to readers who might enjoy my books. It’s hard to think about giving up promoting my books when there might still be audiences out there who would enjoy reading them.
