Why A Guy?

You might ask, why is a guy like Jeff Heller (or any guy) writing about women in the Colonial Era?

  1. She asked me to.  The main character of my novels, Louise, began talking to me more than 30 years ago: telling me her story.  I needed to know more about her, and about what women of that era endured, so I could write a better novel.  I’m still writing, and learning.
  2. Women’s real stories feel like literature, not history.  When you read accounts from frontier feminists, they don’t just tell you what happened; they tell you how it felt, which is just what a novelist needs to know.  Women’s stories are fascinating and a great inspiration to me.
  3. If I don’t tell these stories, who will?  Hopefully, you will help me by adding your stories to this continuing conversation.
