Change is Hard

Changing yourself is hard work, especially when you’re trying to become a better person: more tolerant, braver, more willing to stand up for what you believe is right. Sarah Grimke did just that. A Southern Belle from a slave-holding family in the early 1800s, Sarah morphed over time and painful experience into a fiery enemy of the slave-holding system. Her true story was transformed beautifully into the novel, The Invention of Wings, by Sue Monk Kidd, in 2014. Sarah’s story is paired with the life of her African-American servant, named Handful. Their journey to freedom makes wonderful reading for anyone who loves a fine historical novel, as I do. If you have not yet discovered The Invention of Wings, read it and enjoy.
